History

Green Lizard was founded in 1994. Their first success came in 1996 when they won the Big Prize of the Netherlands, an annual competition for unknown bands offering prize money and performance opportunities. In late 1997 they re-released The Nine EP through Double T Music, which also handled their subsequent album. That EP was produced by Jack Endino, known for his work with Nirvana and Soundgarden, and was recorded in nine days. Their debut album Identity, produced by Clif Norrell, arrived in 2000. The video for the first single Turn Around won the Golden Calf award for animation, created by singer Remi. That same year the band performed at Pinkpop festival after Moloko withdrew. In 2001 they played Pinkpop again, and live recordings were issued as a small live EP, available separately at gigs and as a bonus disc with a reissue of Identity. The second single Autumn had a video mocking fabricated boy bands, featuring members of Dutch bands and standup comedians. Also in 2001 the band received the Silver Harp Award for Identity. The song Down was re-recorded as Down 2K1 with Dutch rapper Brainpower and DJ TLM, and released as the third single. In 2002 their second album Newborn came out on Sony Records, presented at Lowlands festival. Again produced by Clif Norrell, it featured Henry Rollins on two tracks: Common God on the album and Die Fucker as a b-side to the first single Wrong. Four versions of the second single Mouthful were compiled into a live album. In 2004 their contract with Sony ended, and the band wrote songs for a third album in silence. Various members played in other projects, including Jaya The Cat and The Original Soundtrack. In 2005 Newborn was released in Europe with a bonus disc containing clips, movies, and songs from Identity.
