Wulfgar

Icewind Dale's barbarian hero, wielder of the warhammer Aegis-fang.

Wulfgar, son of Beornegar, is the barbarian hero of Icewind Dale in the Forgotten Realms and one of the Companions of the Hall, alongside Drizzt Do'Urden, Catti-brie, Regis and Bruenor Battlehammer. Created by R. A. Salvatore, he was meant to be the protagonist of The Icewind Dale Trilogy before Drizzt took over the lead. As a youth he was flag bearer for Heafstaag, king of the Elk Tribe; when the barbarians invaded Ten-Towns the dwarf Bruenor knocked him out, spared his life and sentenced him to five years and a day of service.

Working the forge, Wulfgar came to see Bruenor as a father, and Bruenor forged him the mithral warhammer Aegis-fang. With Drizzt's help he killed the white dragon Icingdeath, then defeated Heafstaag to lead the Tribe of the Elk. He fell in love with Catti-brie and followed Bruenor and Drizzt in the campaign for Mithral Hall; later a yochlol dragged him to the Abyss, where the demon Errtu tortured him so badly his mind nearly broke. After his death he declined the goddess Mielikki's offer of rebirth, then changed his mind at the end of The Companions (2013) and rejoined the re-formed Companions of the Hall.
