Healing Herb
A simple herb that restores life when the screen turns red and danger looms.
In Dragon Quest (1986), the Healing Herb is a vital consumable item used by the player-controlled hero to recover lost health points (HP) during their quest to save the Kingdom of Alefgard. The game's status window displays the hero's current HP, which drops when taking damage from enemies encountered in the overworld or dungeons. When the display turns red indicating low health, using a Healing Herb replenishes these points, allowing the hero to continue fighting without returning immediately to an inn.

Did You Know?
- The North American version uses battery-backed RAM to save quests, unlike the Japanese password system.
- If the hero's HP falls to zero, they are resurrected by King Lorik but lose half their gold as punishment.
- Exploring dark caves requires a torch or the 'RADIANT' spell to see, making health management via herbs even more critical.
