Gameplay

Treasure Cove! is a side-scrolling educational adventure game where players must stop oil from leaking into the ocean by plugging pipes. The story takes place in a fictional cove polluted by waste from experiments conducted by the Master of Mischief, a recurring villain in The Learning Company's Super Seekers series. Players control the Super Seeker, whose mission is to seal the leaking pipes and rebuild a destroyed bridge to an island by gathering gems, ultimately stopping the pollution at its source.

The cove is divided into three distinct areas. In each area, players collect gems and plug pipes that release creatures called goobies. To plug a pipe, the player must find a pufferfish and drop it onto the opening. If a goobie touches the player, one light unit is lost. To locate the pufferfish, players catch orange starfish and answer their riddles. Each stage provides three clues, each a single descriptive word like "three," "swimming," or "eels." The player then shines a flashlight on groups of animals that match these clues to obtain the pufferfish. Shining light on a group that matches two of the three clues reveals a gem, which adds points toward restoring the Rainbow Bridge.

After finding gems and plugging leaks in all three areas, the player surfaces and adds the gems collected in that session to a total count. Once a certain number of gems is reached, the player advances in star rank, and the Rainbow Bridge extends further. Higher star ranks increase the number of gems to find, make the riddles more challenging, and cause the fish that steal light to move faster and become harder to avoid.

Development

Treasure Cove! is part of The Learning Company's Treasure series, which also includes Treasure Mountain!, Treasure Mathstorm!, and Treasure Galaxy!. This series belongs to the larger Super Solvers line. These educational adventure games focus on math and reading comprehension for young children. Each game follows a three-stage structure: players must answer questions to deduce the location of a special object, which is required to advance to the next stage.

Reception

Treasure Cove! earned a mix of lukewarm and favorable responses. Allgame's Lisa Savignano scored it 3.5 out of 5, calling it a fun title that young children would enjoy. Abandonia reviewers agreed, rating it 3 out of 5. Home of the Underdogs users gave it two thumbs up, praising it as another solid Learning Company release with the same appealing visuals and gameplay found in earlier Super Solvers titles, and declared it one of the finest math games ever designed for five- to eight-year-olds. Upon release, the game received Innovations 1993 Software Showcase Honors at the Summer Consumer Electronics Show.
