Lung Oni
The demon that stole his breath, and the fight to take it back with every gasp.
The Lung Oni is one of the twelve demons that were bound to the infant Hyakkimaru as part of his father Kagemitsu's dark pact with the oni. It occupies the space where his lungs should be, forcing him to rely on a mechanical breathing apparatus for every breath he takes. As a body-part demon, it is both a parasitic presence within his chest and a full-bodied adversary he must confront and destroy to reclaim that vital organ.
In the broader narrative, the Lung Oni represents one of the early and deeply personal losses Hyakkimaru must overcome. Unlike some demons that rob him of limbs or senses, this one attacks the very act of living—breath itself—making its defeat a moment of profound, almost sacred relief for the boy who has never known the simple freedom of drawing air into his own flesh.

Lore & Background
The Lung Oni was summoned by the daimyo Kagemitsu in exchange for military supremacy, and in return it claimed the lungs of his newborn son. For the first years of Hyakkimaru's life, this meant he could not breathe on his own; a crude mechanical device was fitted to his chest to pump air through the empty cavity where his lungs should have been. The demon dwells in that hollow space, a cold and alien presence that makes every inhalation feel borrowed.
When Hyakkimaru and the young thief Dororo set out on their journey to reclaim his twelve stolen parts, the Lung Oni is among the demons they must face. Its domain is the air itself—wind, breath, the thin membrane between life and suffocation. Confronting it means fighting in a space where the demon has an intimate advantage, where a single misstep in rhythm could mean the boy simply stops breathing. The encounter tests not only Hyakkimaru's sword arm and Dororo's agility but also his will to keep living in a body that still feels incomplete.
The defeat of the Lung Oni is marked by a quiet, almost private triumph: the mechanical breathing apparatus is no longer needed, and for the first time Hyakkimaru draws a full, unassisted breath of mountain air. It is a small victory amid twelve, but it carries an emotional weight that the more spectacular limb-recovery fights sometimes lack, because breath is the most fundamental proof that one is still alive.
Reader's Guide
The Lung Oni is one of the twelve demons bound to Hyakkimaru's body, specifically occupying his lungs and forcing him to depend on a mechanical breathing device.
Narrative role: It serves as an early and deeply personal antagonist in Hyakkimaru's quest. Because breath is the most basic function of survival, its defeat carries a raw, visceral emotional payoff that contrasts with the more physical challenges of limb-recovery arcs. It underscores the theme that Hyakkimaru's struggle is not merely about collecting body parts but about reclaiming the right to simply exist in his own body.
Key relationships: It is directly opposed to Hyakkimaru, whose body it parasitizes. Dororo is drawn into the fight as his companion and the one who helps him survive the suffocating conditions the demon creates. Kagemitsu, Hyakkimaru's father, is the one who originally summoned the demon, making the encounter an indirect confrontation with his father's legacy.
Visual/design notes: The Lung Oni is depicted with an ethereal, air-like quality—its form shifting and translucent, evoking breath, mist, and the thinness of life. Its presence is felt as a drop in air pressure, a sudden cold, a stillness where wind should be.
Arc: The encounter builds through a suffocating environment where the demon controls the air, escalating to a direct confrontation where Hyakkimaru must fight while gasping. Victory means the breathing apparatus is removed and Hyakkimaru takes his first free breath, a quiet, private moment of triumph.

- In the original manga by Osamu Tezuka, the twelve demons and their body-part thefts form the structural backbone of Hyakkimaru's entire journey, and the Lung Oni is one of the earliest challenges he faces.
