Tajomaru

The legitimate heir whose existence was built upon the sacrifice of his older brother.

Tahomaru is a pivotal antagonist and tragic figure in the tale of Hyakkimaru, serving as the catalyst for the protagonist's journey of reclamation. Born as the legitimate heir to the Daigo clan, his life was irrevocably altered when his desperate father, the warlord Daigo, made a pact with twelve demons to secure victory in battle. In exchange for power and prosperity, Daigo sacrificed his unborn firstborn son Hyakkimaru's body parts to these entities, leaving the infant Tahomaru born whole as the younger brother while Hyakkimaru was placed in a basket and set adrift on a river by his father's order.

Lore & Background

The dynamic between Tahomaru and Hyakkimaru forms the emotional core of the narrative's climax. When the brothers finally confront one another, the revelation shatters Tahomaru's world—though he has already learned the truth earlier, the full weight of it crashes down. He is forced to acknowledge that his life, his body, and his title belong rightfully to the disfigured wanderer he once mocked or ignored. This confrontation forces a reckoning not just for Hyakkimaru, who seeks to reclaim what was stolen, but for Tahomaru, who must face the reality of being a fraud living a lie constructed by his father's greed.

Reader's Guide

Tajomaru originates as the biological son of Lord Daigo, a warlord who traded his unborn child's body parts to twelve demons for military success. While his brother Hyakkimaru was cast out into the wilderness, Tajomaru remained in the castle, raised as the true heir and inheriting the clan's wealth and status. In Hyakkimaru's journey, Tajomaru serves as the living embodiment of the theft that created the protagonist's suffering. He is not a demon himself but a human who benefits from demonic pacts. Physically, he appears as a healthy, well-dressed nobleman, contrasting sharply with his brother's prosthetic limbs and missing organs. His existence is a direct result of the demons taking Hyakkimaru's flesh to grant Tajomaru health. Ultimately, Tajomaru meets a tragic end upon learning the truth of his birth. Confronted by Hyakkimaru and the crumbling legacy of his father's sins, he cannot reconcile his identity with the reality of his origin. In the final confrontation, often amidst the chaos of the castle burning down, Tajomaru perishes, his life extinguished as the cycle of sacrifice comes to a close.
