Lore & Background
The Hell Gate is a portal that connects Hell to Earth. It was opened by demons following the events of the original Doom. The marine, after defeating the Spider Mastermind, discovers this portal and uses it to return to Earth. Upon arrival, he finds that Earth has been invaded by demons through this gate, resulting in the deaths of billions of people. The only ground spaceport on Earth was taken over by the demons, who placed a barrier over it, preventing any ships from leaving. The marine battles through hordes of demons to deactivate the force field, allowing the remaining humans to escape. After the survivors escape, the marine is the only human left on the planet. He then receives an off-planet transmission from the survivors in orbit, who have found that the demonic base is in the center of the marine's own hometown. He fights through the city until he reaches the base, but sees no way to stop the invasion on that side. He decides to step into the portal to try deactivating it from the other side, entering Hell.
