Berkshire pig

A British pig breed known for its black coat and white markings.

Last updated

Fewer than 300 breeding sows were known to exist in 2008.[1]

Biology and range

Herds are maintained in England by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.[1] One herd is at Aldenham Country Park in Hertfordshire.[1] Another herd is at the South of England Rare Breeds Centre in Kent.[1] The breed was listed as vulnerable in 2008.[1]

Numbers have increased due to revived popularity.[1] This popularity is connected to Japanese marketing of a "wagyu for pork" connection.[1]

What the specialist sources record

The Rare Breeds Survival Trust watch list documented the breed's vulnerable status in 2008.[1] The same watch list recorded fewer than 300 breeding sows at that time.[1]
