Characters
Cory Baxter (Kyle Massey) is the protagonist, son of Victor and Tanya Baxter. He is friends with Newt Livingston and has a crush on Meena Paroom. Cory is often irritated by the President's daughter Sophie Martinez due to her two-facedness, and by Candy Smiles, who calls him "C-Bear." He frequently seeks advice from his father and devises get-rich-quick schemes that fail.
He plays drums in the band DC3, founded with Newt and Meena. His catchphrases include "Coming Daddy!," "You Know How I Do," "Dang!" and "Daddy No!" Like his sister Raven, Cory often gets into crazy situations but finds a way out. In That's So Raven, younger Cory was a minor annoyance and villain, whereas in his own show he resembles Raven more.
He will do anything for money, and in some episodes his trousers fall down to reveal underwear with dollar signs. Newton "Newt" Livingston III (Jason Dolley) is the son of a senator and the Chief Justice, and best friend of Cory and Meena. He is somewhat clueless and loves rock and roll, sharing traits with Raven's friend Chelsea Daniels. He often says "Awesome!" in unexciting situations, has trouble with obvious things but can solve confusing ones, and plays guitar in DC3.
He knows about Cory's crush on Meena, wears jeans and chains, and once had a crush on Sophie. He dislikes the idea of running for student body president because it would disrupt his carefree lifestyle, despite his parents' wishes, and he creates excuses for them on "Excuse Day."
Production
Raven-Symoné declined the offer, so Disney Channel gave the spin-off to Kyle Massey. The first episode aired as a sneak peek on January 12, 2007. The series was created and produced by Dennis Rinsler and Marc Warren, who had previously worked on That's So Raven and Even Stevens. Filming took place from July 18, 2006, to November 7, 2007, at Hollywood Center Studios, where The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and That's So Raven were filmed, and used a studio audience in most scenes.
Many episode titles parody popular songs, such as "We Built This Kitty on Rock and Roll" from "We Built This City. The theme song was written and produced by Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil, performed by Kyle Massey, Maiara Walsh, and Jason Dolley, though closing credits credit only Massey. An alternate theme, "Rollin' to D.C.," was used in a promotional music video. The show was intended for three seasons.
During filming of a season two episode on a rented boat, Kyle Massey jumped off the boat himself instead of using a stunt person, an incident recalled by production designer Jerry Dunn and director Eric Dean Seaton, who noted Massey had permission to do the jump.
Broadcast
The series originally aired on Disney Channel from January 12, 2007, to September 12, 2008. It returned to Disney Channel on September 24, 2014, as part of Disney Replay. It premiered on Family Channel on the same date, on Disney XD (Canada) on June 1, 2011, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on January 28, 2007, on Disney Channel. It also aired on Disney Channel in Australia and New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and India in 2007. Plans to add it to the ABC Kids lineup in fall 2007 were scrapped.
