On the afternoon of 5 May, a massive mudflow (lahar) swept down the southwest flank, destroying a sugar mill and burying about 150 people. This flow generated three tsunamis as it hit the sea, damaging coastal buildings and boats. That night, explosions resumed, and by the morning of 6 May, parts of the eruption plume became incandescent, signaling that magma had reached the surface—phreatic eruptions had given way to magmatic ones. A brief lull ended on 8 May at about 8:00 a.m. with a tremendous eruption. A ground-hugging pyroclastic surge of incandescent lava particles and searing gases moved at hurricane speed down the southwest flank, reaching Saint-Pierre at 8:02 a.m. Escape was virtually impossible; nearly everyone in the city—about 28,000 people—died, most burned or buried by falling masonry. The hot ash ignited a firestorm fueled by smashed buildings and rum casks. One survivor within the city was a prisoner locked in a windowless jail cell; at least two others survived inside the city, and a few tens of people at the cloud’s margins, most badly burned. Explosive activity on 20 May killed another 2,000 people, including rescuers and mariners. A powerful eruption on 30 August generated a pyroclastic flow killing over 800. The eruption continued until 5 October 1905.
