On 26 April 1986, reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, situated near the city of Pripyat in what was then Soviet Ukraine, exploded. This event is one of only two nuclear accidents ever classified at the highest severity level on the International Nuclear Event Scale, alongside Japan’s 2011 Fukushima disaster. The explosion occurred during a safety test designed to simulate reactor cooling during a blackout. Operators were running the test after an accidental drop in reactor power, and when they attempted to shut down the reactor under those conditions, fundamental design flaws triggered a sudden power surge. The reactor’s components ruptured, coolant was lost, and subsequent steam explosions and a meltdown destroyed the reactor building. A fire in the reactor core then spread radioactive contamination across the Soviet Union and Europe. The Soviet government established a 10-kilometer exclusion zone about 36 hours later, initially evacuating around 49,000 people, then expanding it to 30 kilometers and evacuating roughly 68,000 more.
