**Plot**
Nearly a year after Jafar’s defeat, Aladdin and Abu live in the Agrabah palace with Princess Jasmine and the Sultan. Craving adventure, Aladdin stops a bumbling criminal gang led by Abis Mal and returns stolen goods to the townspeople. Meanwhile, Iago escapes from Jafar’s lamp in the desert. Tired of Jafar’s mistreatment, Iago refuses to free him and drops the lamp into a well.
Iago flies to Agrabah, hoping to befriend Aladdin and return to the palace. During his first encounter with Aladdin and Abu, Abis Mal and his men attack, and Iago accidentally saves Aladdin’s life. Grateful, Aladdin lets Iago stay on palace grounds and promises to speak to the Sultan for him. Abis Mal later finds Jafar’s lamp in the well and frees him. Hampered by his inept new master, Jafar tricks Abis Mal into wasting his first two wishes, then enlists his help for revenge on Aladdin. Abis Mal agrees, also wanting payback.
Meanwhile, Genie returns after a year of traveling the world. Though free, he retains some magic but is far weaker than when he granted wishes. At a banquet, the Sultan names Aladdin the new Royal Vizier. Rajah discovers Iago in the garden and chases him into the feast.

Lore & Background
The Return of Jafar was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation following the success of The Little Mermaid and the Disney Afternoon television series. Before the theatrical release of Aladdin, Disney commissioned Tad Stones and Alan Zaslove to produce a direct-to-television project that would transition the film into a television series. While conceiving the sequel, Stones became fascinated with the character Iago, and the story was developed around how Iago escaped from Jafar's lamp and ended up with Aladdin. The film was originally planned as an hour-long television special, but Stones suggested a home video release instead, a idea initially resisted by Disney executives who felt it would cheapen the brand. Layout designer Paul Felix conceived the film's opening, which was animated at Disney Animation Australia, while the climax was animated in Japan. Due to a well-publicized bitter fallout over the use of his voice in the marketing campaign for Aladdin, Robin Williams refused to reprise the role of the Genie, and was replaced by Dan Castellaneta. Stones claimed that Williams participated in selecting Castellaneta for the role.
Reader's Guide
The Return of Jafar is significant as the first American direct-to-video animated feature film and the first Disney direct-to-video animated feature film. Its release on home video rather than in theaters was driven by time constraints and lower costs, as producing a theatrical release would have taken up to five years, while a home video release took less than two years. The film sold 15 million VHS tapes and grossed more than $300 million on a budget of approximately $5 million, making it one of the United States' best-selling films on home video. Despite its commercial success, the film received mostly negative reviews. It also marked the first Aladdin full-length production without the original voice of the Sultan, Douglas Seale, who was replaced by Val Bettin. The film's legacy includes establishing the direct-to-video model for Disney animated sequels and launching the Aladdin animated television series.
