Massospondylidae
Early massopod dinosaurs spanning multiple continents.
Massospondylidae is a family of early massopod dinosaurs whose fossils have been found across Asia, Africa, and South America, exclusively from the Early Jurassic. Huene first named the group in 1914, and it is defined as a stem-based taxon—meaning it includes all species more closely related to *Massospondylus carinatus* than to either *Plateosaurus engelhardti* or *Saltasaurus loricatus*.
Over the years, many dinosaurs have been placed within this family. The most comprehensive cladistic analysis of early sauropodomorphs, published by Apaldetti and colleagues in November 2011, identified *Adeopapposaurus*, *Coloradisaurus*, *Glacialisaurus*, *Massospondylus*, *Leyesaurus*, and *Lufengosaurus* as massospondylids. This finding agreed with several earlier, smaller studies. However, the same analysis placed the recently described North American massopods *Sarahsaurus* and *Seitaad*, as well as the South African *Ignavusaurus*, outside Massospondylidae—contrary to some earlier provisional suggestions. Earlier in 2011, the Indian sauropodomorph *Pradhania* was tested in a large cladistic analysis for the first time and turned out to be a relatively basal massospondylid. *Mussaurus* and *Xixiposaurus* may also belong to this family.
In 2019, a specimen from South Africa that had previously been assigned to *Massospondylus* was re-examined and recognized as a distinct genus, named *Ngwevu*.
