Guaibasauridae is a group of early sauropodomorph dinosaurs, based on fossils from Late Triassic sites in Brazil and Argentina. Scientists are still unsure exactly which dinosaurs belong to this family or how they are related. The family was first proposed in 1999 for a single species, *Guaibasaurus candelariensis*. When a better-preserved second skeleton of *Guaibasaurus* was studied in 2007, it became easier to compare with other puzzling early saurischians—dinosaurs that mix features of both theropods and sauropodomorphs. That study found that *Saturnalia*, which looks very similar to *Guaibasaurus*, could also be placed in Guaibasauridae, though no formal family tree was made. The researchers also tentatively added the poorly known *Agnosphitys*, but later analyses in 2017 did not support that. The 2007 study noted that guaibasaurids share more traits with theropods than with early sauropodomorphs (once called "prosauropods"). Because of this, the authors suggested guaibasaurids might be a very early branch on the line leading to sauropodomorphs, or possibly ancestral to both sauropodomorphs and theropods. They interpreted this as evidence that the common ancestor of both saurischian groups was more theropod-like than prosauropod-like. In 2010, the subfamily Saturnaliinae was defined for *Saturnalia* and *Chromogisaurus*, which several studies treat as close relatives. Sometimes saturnaliines are placed within Guaibasauridae, but other studies see them as a separate, very early sauropodomorph lineage. By 2019, some researchers elevated Saturnaliinae to family rank as Saturnaliidae, adding *Pampadromaeus* and *Panphagia*, while recovering *Guaibasaurus* as a basal theropod. More recently, *Guaibasaurus* has been placed back among sauropodomorphs, possibly with Unaysauridae, while Saturnaliidae is seen as a group of even more basal sauropodomorphs. Among former guaibasaurids, *Agnosphitys* is generally considered a problematic taxon and has not been consistently placed in Silesauridae in mainstream literature, while *Eoraptor*, *Panphagia*, *Saturnalia*, and *Chromogisaurus* are considered very early sauropodomorphs, possibly forming their own clade.
