The Crusade

A holy army forged in ice and faith to march against the Prime Evils.

The Crusade was a massive military expedition formed by the Order of Saint Cyre to march across the frozen wastes of the Northern Highlands and reclaim the Cathedral of Light from demonic forces. Led by the charismatic but flawed Paladin Deckard Cain's contemporary, the mercenary leader Izual (though often confused with the angel), the true leadership fell to the human commander Tyrael's mortal proxy, the Paladin named Albrecht, and later, the legendary hero known as the Wanderer in some tellings, though historically it was a coalition of humans, angels, and mercenaries united against the Prime Evils. It stands as one of humanity's most valiant yet tragic attempts to push back the darkness during the Second War.

Lore & Background

Born from the desperation of a world teetering on the brink of annihilation, The Crusade was assembled after the fall of Mount Arreat. With the demon Diablo having been defeated only to be reborn as the Lord of Destruction, the High Council called upon every able-bodied soldier and holy warrior to join the charge northward. They were not merely a band of adventurers but a formalized army, complete with siege engines, supply lines, and a rigid chain of command, representing the peak of human military organization in Sanctuary's history. The expedition was marked by unwavering zeal, yet it was plagued by internal discord and the overwhelming power of their enemies. As they advanced through the frozen wastes, they faced not only the legions of Mephisto but also the corruption that began to seep into their own ranks. The tragic irony of the Crusade is that while they sought to purge evil, their methods often mirrored the very brutality they fought against, culminating in a catastrophic failure when the demonic influence turned their leaders against them or led to their slaughter.

Reader's Guide

The Crusade serves as the primary military force in the later stages of Diablo II's narrative arc, representing humanity's organized resistance against the Prime Evils. Unlike the lone wanderers who previously faced demons, this faction is a structured army composed of knights, archers, and mages, all sworn to the Order of Saint Cyre. Their goals are singular: march north, reclaim the Cathedral of Light, and destroy Mephisto before he can corrupt the world further. They rely on overwhelming numbers and holy magic, often utilizing siege tactics that would be impossible for a single hero. Key members include high-ranking paladins, veteran mercenaries, and occasionally angelic advisors like Tyrael. In the broader conflict, The Crusade acts as a desperate last stand. While they possess great strength, their rigid structure makes them vulnerable to demonic deception and internal corruption.
