Lore & Background

Harrison is first introduced as an infant, the product of Dexter and Rita's relationship. After Rita's murder by the Trinity Killer in the season four finale, Harrison becomes Dexter's sole responsibility. Dexter raises him alongside his half-siblings, Cody and Astor, though the children are eventually taken in by their grandparents. In Dexter: New Blood, a now-teenaged Harrison tracks down his father in Iron Lake, New York, and the two attempt to rebuild a relationship. Harrison eventually learns the truth about Dexter's past as the Bay Harbor Butcher and, after a confrontation, shoots and kills Dexter, believing it is the only way to stop the cycle of violence. In Dexter: Resurrection, a physically weakened Dexter survives the shooting and tracks Harrison to protect him after Harrison starts committing his own murders.

Reader's Guide

After Rita's death, Harrison becomes the primary motivation for Dexter to maintain his facade of a normal life. In Dexter: New Blood, the teenage Harrison badly wounds a classmate, Ethan Williams, in a knife fight and claims self-defense; Dexter's blood-spatter reconstruction shows that Harrison stabbed Ethan unprovoked. The climax of the series sees Harrison shooting Dexter, an act that he believes will free them both from the 'Dark Passenger.' However, in Dexter: Resurrection, Dexter survives and tracks Harrison to protect him after Harrison begins committing his own murders. This time, Dexter shows a new evolution: he prioritizes saving a killer's next victim over killing the man, a choice he has never made before, suggesting he has begun caring about other people for the first time.
