Sundqvist grew up in Boden, Sweden, and played within the Skellefteå organization at youth and professional levels. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2012 after the team was encouraged by European scout Tommy Westlund. Sundqvist made his Swedish Elite League debut with Skellefteå in October 2012 and helped the club win the 2014 Swedish Championship. He also earned a silver medal with Sweden at the 2014 World Junior Championships, scoring the game-winning goal against Russia in the semifinal.

Moving to North America in 2015, Sundqvist spent three seasons in the Penguins organization, primarily with their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He made his NHL debut in February 2016 and scored his first NHL goal that April. Though he did not play enough games to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup, the Penguins honored him with a ring and a day with the Cup after their 2016 championship. In 2017, Sundqvist was traded to the St. Louis Blues along with a first-round pick for Ryan Reaves and a second-round pick.

With the Blues, Sundqvist established himself as a reliable fourth-line centre and penalty killer. He suffered a head injury during the 2018 preseason from a hit by Tom Wilson, missing eight games. Despite the Blues being in last place in January 2019, Sundqvist recorded a career-high 31 points in 71 games and helped the team win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history during the 2019 playoffs.
