Vrána began skating at a rink owned by the brother of former Capitals scout Vojtech Kucera and moved away from home at age 15 to play in the SHL. He made his Elitserien debut with Linköping HC in the 2012–13 season, becoming the youngest foreign player in league history. After being drafted by the Capitals, he developed in the AHL with the Hershey Bears before making his NHL debut in December 2016. His rookie season in 2017–18 was described as a 'roller-coaster,' but he contributed eight points in 23 playoff games to help the Capitals win their first Stanley Cup. Vrána was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in April 2021 and signed a three-year, $16.25 million contract later that year. After a stint with the St. Louis Blues, he returned to Washington on a professional tryout agreement in August 2024, then was claimed by Nashville in March 2025.
