Tanjuro Kamado

The gentle father whose dance ignited the sun within his son.

Tanjuro Kamado is the late patriarch of the Kamado family and the father of Tanjiro and Nezuko. Before his death, he was a charcoal seller who lived with his family in the mountains. Though not a Demon Slayer by title, he played a pivotal role in preserving an ancient lineage of combat techniques passed down through generations.

Quick Facts

Character
Father of Tanjiro Kamado

Lore & Background

Despite his frail body and illness, he never tired during the family's yearly night-long dance in frigid weather. This feat hinted at a latent connection to the Sun Breathing style, though it was treated by the family as a sacred fire dance rather than combat training. The Kamado household maintained this tradition in honor of their ancestors who had protected the secret of the original breathing style. Tanjuro taught his son to perform the dance before his passing, unknowingly preparing Tanjiro for a future where that ritual would become the key to defeating demons.

Reader's Guide

The Kamado family served as silent guardians of an ancient martial art known originally as Sun Breathing. Tanjuro inherited this lineage, performing the Hinokami Kagura faithfully despite failing health. Demons can only be killed by direct sunlight, decapitation with a Nichirin blade, or a poison extracted from wisteria flowers. The Kamado ritual preserved the original form of these techniques without the users knowing its combat application until Tanjiro awakened it.
