The Erie Sailors name first appeared in 1906 in the Interstate League and was used sporadically by unrelated teams through 1932. From 1938 to 1963, a more continuous Sailors franchise played in the Middle Atlantic League, the PONY League, and the New York–Penn League, sometimes called the Erie Senators after their major league affiliate. The team won the league championship in 1957 and had a nine-game regular-season lead in 1951 before losing the championship series to the Niagara Falls Citizens. From 1948 onward, all Sailors teams played at Ainsworth Field.

In 1990, after the Baltimore Orioles ended their affiliation with the team (then the Erie Orioles), the Sailors name was revived for an unaffiliated team. They became a Texas Rangers affiliate in 1993, then moved to Augusta, New Jersey after the 1993 season and became the Augusta Mountaineers. In 1994, a separate Sailors team in the independent Frontier League won the league championship in its only year, then folded; the Erie SeaWolves were a separate franchise that began play in 1995.
