History

Founded in 1929, FK Budućnost Banatski Dvor began its ascent through the league system in the 1990s after Yugoslav-Swiss businessman Mirko Vučurević took over. The club topped its division every year from 1995–96 through 1998–99, which brought four straight promotions and a place in the Serbian League Vojvodina. A runner-up finish in the third tier then earned a spot in the Second League of FR Yugoslavia. In the early 2000s, the team reached the FR Yugoslavia Cup quarter-finals in 2000–01 and the semi-finals two years later, falling to Red Star Belgrade both times.

Winning the Second League’s North Group in 2002–03 secured a historic first promotion to the First League of Serbia and Montenegro, though relegation followed immediately. Despite that, the club made the 2003–04 Serbia and Montenegro Cup final, losing 1–0 to Red Star, which qualified them for the 2004–05 UEFA Cup; Slovenian side Maribor eliminated them on away goals in the second qualifying round. That same season, they won promotion back to the top flight.

In January 2006, after Proleter Zrenjanin folded, reports indicated Budućnost Banatski Dvor would become Banat Zrenjanin, a change completed after the 2005–06 campaign.
