Background

The compilation was first teased in a Facebook post by Deadmau5's Mau5trap label, which initially offered it for free. It eventually came out on March 3, 2017, as a digital-only release. The original tracklist was supposed to include the Spotify-exclusive version of "Creep" from Album Title Goes Here, "The Big Difference" from deadmau5 Circa 1998–2002, "Oblistique" from Project 56, and "Bored of Canada" from Get Scraped, but for reasons that were never explained, these songs were left off the final version.

Many of the tracks that did make the cut had already appeared elsewhere. "Messages from Nowhere", "Sometimes I Fail", "Support", "Try Again", and "Unspecial Effects" were all on Zimmerman's first studio album, Get Scraped. "Digitol" and "Squid" came from A Little Oblique. "Screen Door", "Long Walk Off a Short Pier", "Superlover", and an earlier version of "My Opinion" were all on the 2006 compilation deadmau5 Circa 1998–2002, along with "Obsidian" (originally listed as "Obsidian (Halcyon441 Remix)").

The track "HaxPigMeow" had never been officially released on any album; it was first uploaded to Deadmau5's SoundCloud in 2016 under the name "Get in the Pig Meowingtons" before being taken down later that year. Parts of that track later turned up in "Infra Turbo Pigcart Racer", which appeared on his 2014 album While(1<2).
