School Tales The Series

School Tales The Series (Thai: โรงเรียนผีมีอยู่ว่า…; RTGS: Rong Rian Phee Mee Yu Wa..., meaning "There is a Ghost School that...") is a Thai mystery thriller anthology television series produced by Five Star Production. The show is built around eight well-known horror stories, each exploring different eerie events that occur on school grounds after dark. It premiered worldwide on Netflix on August 10, 2022.

The cast includes Kay Lertsittichai, Nutchapan Paramacharenroj, and Panisara Rikulsurakan in "7AM"; Jennis Oprasert, Siwat Jumlongkul, and Pitchatorn Santinatornkul in "Vengeful Spell"; Shinaradee Anupongpichart and Thasorn Klinnium in "Beautiful"; Patchanan Jiajirachote and Sarika Sathsilpsupa in "The Book of Corpses"; Pannawit Phattanasiri, Waratthip Kittiphaisan, and Thongchai Thongkanthom in "Headless Teacher"; Tonhon Tantivejakul and Srida Puapimol in "Lunch"; Patchata Janngeon and Nalinthip Phoemphattharasakun in "Curse"; and Suppapong Udomkaewkanjana and Wachirawit Ruangwiwat in "A Walk in School."

Produced by Five Star Production, the series features 14 actors across eight unrelated episodes, directed by six different directors. Filming began in late 2021. The project was announced during Geeked Week 2022, held from June 6 to June 10, 2022, with three short stories—"Lunch," "Curse," and "A Walk in School"—previewed on the first day of the event.

Upon its release on August 10, 2022, viewers noticed that a character in the "Curse" episode wore a school uniform bearing the BLHS community logo as the school emblem. This sparked the hashtag "#รพขิ๊ก" to trend on Thai Twitter. On August 11, 2022, the Five Star Production fan page shared a letter stating they had contacted the uniform designer. The staff informed the copyright owner that the designer was ready to accept responsibility and work toward a resolution, which could include paying royalties.

The series faced strong criticism for clichéd plots, lack of coherence, and what many saw as overly familiar tactics to attract viewers. Despite this, it maintained a spot in Netflix’s top 10 for four weeks in Thailand and for two weeks in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

Lore & Background

The series was produced by Five Star Production, casting 14 actors in eight unrelated episodes under six directors. Filming started in late 2021, and the announcement was made during Geeked Week 2022, which took place from June 6 to June 10, 2022. On the first day of the event, three short stories—Lunch, Curse, and A Walk in School—were shown in advance.

When the series premiered on August 10, 2022, viewers noticed a character in the episode 'Curse' using the BLHS community logo as the school's emblem on uniforms. This led to the hashtag '#รพขิ๊ก' trending on Thai Twitter. The Five Star Production fan page later shared a letter on August 11, 2022, stating that they had gotten in touch with the designer of the uniforms. The staff told the copyright owner that the designer was prepared to accept accountability and work with them to find a solution, which might involve paying royalties.

Reader's Guide

School Tales The Series is significant as a Thai horror anthology that brought eight popular ghost stories to a global audience via Netflix. Despite receiving harsh criticism for its cliched plot, lack of coherence, and excessively similar viewer-attracting strategies, the series achieved notable viewership. It held its place in the top 10 for four weeks in Thailand and for two weeks in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam in terms of Netflix views. The series also sparked a copyright infringement controversy shortly after its release, when the BLHS community logo was used without permission on uniforms in the 'Curse' episode, leading to public discussion and a response from the production team. Its legacy lies in demonstrating both the international reach of Thai horror content and the challenges of intellectual property management in streaming-era productions.
