The franchise was founded in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams in Cleveland, Ohio. The franchise won the 1945 NFL Championship Game, then moved to Los Angeles in 1946. The club is the only NFL franchise to win championships representing three different cities: Cleveland in 1945, St. Louis in 1999, and Los Angeles in 1951 and 2021.

Week 6 against San Francisco showcased the Rams' resilience under new leadership. In a penalty-filled game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, quarterback Pat Haden threw two touchdown passes: one from 3 yards to John Cappelletti and another from 11 yards to Wayne Miller. The victory kept the team unbeaten while spoiling O.J. Simpson's return as a former USC star; Simpson rushed for 83 yards on 20 carries but couldn't prevent the loss. Frank Corral added two field goals (47 and 38 yards) while the 49ers' Ray Wersching kicked one from 25 yards. Steve Deberg struggled, completing only 7 of 26 passes for 83 yards and missing a critical fourth-down pass late in the game.

The Rams' original tenure in Los Angeles lasted from 1946 to 1994. They played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum until 1980, then moved to Anaheim Stadium. After the 1994 season, they moved to St. Louis, becoming the St. Louis Rams. They returned to Los Angeles for the 2016 season. The team's home games are now at SoFi Stadium.
