Background

Kevin Williams returned the opening kickoff 36 yards, sparking a drive that ended with Emmitt Smith's 5-yard touchdown run. Smith left the game in the first quarter with a hamstring injury. After a 50-yard Chris Jacke field goal, Aikman, taking a snap from his own 6-yard line, heaved a deep pass to Alvin Harper, who raced to the end zone for a 94-yard touchdown, breaking the old playoff record of 93 yards.

Smith's replacement Blair Thomas ran in from the 1 for a 21–3 lead. Green Bay answered with Edgar Bennett's 1-yard touchdown run, but their two-point attempt failed, and Aikman's 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Scott Galbraith with five seconds left in the half made it 28–9. Green Bay did not score again, and Thomas added a second touchdown on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.
