Daftendirektour

Daft Punk’s first tour, the Daftendirektour, ran from February through December 1997. The duo brought their home studio gear to the stage, syncing drum machines, bass lines, and a sequencer that controlled tempo and bar structure. On top of that framework, they layered samples and parts they could cue at will. Little video from the tour exists; a clip of “Rollin’ & Scratchin’” appears in *D.A.F.T.: A Story About Dogs, Androids, Firemen and Tomatoes*, and elements of “Alive” from the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles are known. The band ran several machines with ArKaos software into a custom visual setup.

A live album, *Alive 1997*, was released in 2001, featuring the Que Club Birmingham show from 8 November 1997—Daft Punk’s own favorite recording from the tour. In 2022, the full Mayan Theater set was streamed to promote the rerelease of *Homework* and *Alive 1997*.

No official setlist was ever published. Based on known performances from 14 June, 9 August, 8 November, and 17 December 1997, the average setlist (minus the encore) was: “Musique,” “Revolution 909,” “Fresh,” an early “Short Circuit,” “Daftendirekt” / “Da Funk,” Armand van Helden’s “Ten Minutes of Funk” mix of “Da Funk,” “Rollin’ & Scratchin’,” an unreleased track, “Alive” / “Can You Feel It” (CLS cover), “Burnin’,” “French Kiss” (Lil Louis cover), “Around the World” / “The Chase” (Giorgio Moroder cover), “Teachers,” and an encore of “Rock’n Roll” / “Oh Yeah” / “You Can’t Hide From Your Bud” (DJ Sneak cover). Shows were improvised; order and number of songs varied. Some publications label the “Short Circuit” to “Daftendirekt” transition as “WDPK (Part I),” and the unreleased track has been called an alternate live “Revolution 909,” “WDPK (Part II),” or “Pulsar.” At least once, “Fresh” and the album version of “Revolution 909” were played between “Musique” and “Short Circuit.”
