History

A new club was formed in Rhyl just a week after the announcement that the old club would be liquidated. Former Rhyl FC board members Adam Roche and Tom Jamieson joined forces with the Rhyl Fans Association, with Jamieson stepping in as interim chairman. The RFA put the idea to a vote among its members, who backed it strongly. An online poll then asked supporters to pick a name.

The clear winner was Rhyl FC, but the Football Association of Wales said a fresh name was needed. A second ballot saw 82% of RFA members cast votes; CPD Y Rhyl 1879 won with 54.6% of the vote, while AFC Rhyl took 45.4%. The club applied to the North Wales Coast FA to play in tier four for the 2020–21 season. In July 2020, it was placed in the Premier Division of the new North Wales Coast East Football League.

The 2020–21 season was called off because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The team’s first competitive match came in the 2021–22 Welsh Cup, a 10–0 home win over Rhyl Dragons in the first qualifying round. They then beat Prestatyn Sports 2–0 and Rhydymwyn 1–0 before losing 5–0 to Cymru Premier champions Connah's Quay Nomads in the second round. The club ended the 2021–22 season as league champions and on 9 June 2022 was promoted to the tier 3 Ardal NW League for the 2022–23 season.
