Caersws F.C.
Caersws FC, founded in the late 19th century, plays in the Cymru North.
Caersws Football Club, known in Welsh as Clwb Pêl Droed Caersŵs, competes in the Cymru North. The club began in the late 1800s as Caersws Amateurs and changed to its current name in 1974 when it gave up amateur status. Home matches are played at the Recreation Ground in Caersws, a venue that can hold 4,000 people, 500 of them seated. The team usually wears blue shirts, white shorts, and blue socks, with orange shirts, black shorts, and orange socks as the alternative kit.
The earliest recorded match involving a Caersws side took place on 24 December 1877, when Caersws Red Rose faced Newtown Blue Stars. Two days later, Caersws British played the Newtown Blue Stars reserve team. The club saw little success until the 1960s, winning the Mid Wales League in 1959–60, 1960–61, and 1962–63, and reaching three Welsh Amateur Cup finals, winning the trophy in 1960–61. They later won that cup, by then renamed the Welsh Intermediate Cup, in 1989. After a dip in league form, they reclaimed the Mid Wales League title in 1978 and added four more before joining the Cymru Alliance in 1990. In 1992, they became a founder member of the League of Wales.
Caersws won the League Cup in 2000–01 and 2001–02, and competed in the Intertoto Cup, losing 3–1 on aggregate to Bulgaria’s PFC Marek Dupnitsa. Relegated from the Welsh Premier League in 2010, they returned to the Cymru Alliance. Another relegation in 2018 saw them drop to the Mid Wales League. In 2020, they helped form the third-tier Ardal North East, and earned promotion to the Cymru North in 2023.
The club’s biggest win was a 20–1 victory over Aberystwyth Town in the Mid Wales League in September 1962. Their biggest defeat is unknown, but their heaviest loss in the League of Wales was 0–7 against Total Network Solutions in 1995.
Managers have included George Antonio (November 1972 to January 1973), Reg Greasley (until May 1979), Melvyn Jones (May 1979 to July 1982), Mickey Evans (July 1982 to June 2007), Michael Barton (June 2007 to February 2008), Dave Taylor (March 2008 to June 2009), Mickey Evans again (June 2009 to May 2013), Graham Evans (May 2013 to May 2018), Mark Griffiths (May 2018 to May 2022), Mark Griffiths and Luke Williams jointly (May 2022 to September 2023), Luke Williams alone (September 2023 to February 2025), a period without a manager (February to May 2025), and Craig Williams (from May 2025).
