Story
Kingdom Hearts IV begins the 'Lost Master' story arc. The game is set in Quadratum, a realistic city inspired by Tokyo with fictionalized Shibuya and Minami-Aoyama, where Sora's apartment serves as an early home base. Quadratum acts as a hub world. Scala ad Calum returns. Disney worlds include the Hercules-based Underworld and a new world based on the 2017 Pixar film Coco. Sora wields the Keyblade against darkness. Donald Duck and Goofy return as companions. The Dandelions, an organization working with Quadratum's government, includes Strelitzia and Sigurd from Kingdom Hearts Union χ. Vali from Kingdom Hearts Union χ Dark Road also appears. Characters from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days have minor roles. Mickey Mouse returns. Disney and Pixar party members include Miguel and Héctor; other characters include Ernesto de la Cruz, Hades, and Maleficent, who plays a very important role.
Development
Development on the next mainline entry after Kingdom Hearts III began by January 2020. The ending of Kingdom Hearts III and its Re Mind DLC set up Sora's arrival in Quadratum and introduced Yozora, the main character of the in-universe game Verum Rex. Quadratum's design evokes Shibuya from The World Ends with You and Final Fantasy Versus XIII; Yozora's design resembles Noctis Lucis Caelum from Final Fantasy XV. In March 2020, Nomura stated Versus XIII and Verum Rex were 'completely different' but an 'unexpected development' was occurring, and later confirmed Quadratum's Shibuya is unrelated to that in The World Ends with You. In January 2020, Nomura said more time was needed before the next main entry and revealed two new development teams. By September 2020, discussions between Square Enix and Disney were ongoing, with Nomura having concepts in mind and confirming Yozora would be involved in an unexpected way. Kingdom Hearts IV was formally announced in April 2022, with additional details revealed in mid-2026 alongside its release window.
