Development

Clips of the games featured in this collection appeared in the credits of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix, hinting at the collection. In an interview with IGN, Shinji Hashimoto stated that the studio would consider another HD collection if the reaction to the first was positive enough. The collection was announced on October 14, 2013, exclusively for the PlayStation 3. It was developed mainly by the Square Enix 1st Production Department in Osaka, along with Square Enix's Tokyo team. In July 2017, Tetsuya Nomura spoke about bringing the collection to the Xbox One, saying he did not believe there was much demand outside North America but felt it could be possible after Kingdom Hearts III was completed. At X019 in November 2019, Hashimoto and Ichiro Hazama announced the collection would release on Xbox One in 2020; it arrived on February 18, 2020. A Windows release via Epic Games Store followed on March 30, 2021, and later on Steam on June 13, 2024. A cloud version for Nintendo Switch was announced in October 2021.

Games

Kingdom Hearts II takes place one year after the events of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Sora returns to search for his lost friends, encountering characters from Disney films and Final Fantasy games, as well as Organization XIII. The backgrounds and textures were adjusted from the original 4:3 aspect ratio to HD 16:9, with additional imagery added to menu screens and the Gummi Ship area. Co-director Tai Yasue stated that approximately 80% of the original audio was remixed, with additional orchestral elements added. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix was released outside Japan for the first time in this collection. Birth by Sleep is a prequel set ten years before the original Kingdom Hearts, following Terra, Aqua, and Ventus as they search for Master Xehanort and fight the Unversed. Moving from the PlayStation Portable to the PlayStation 3 allowed more detail in character designs, additional atmospheric sounds, and camera control with the right analog stick. The Mirage Arena multiplayer component was reworked to single-player only, with enemy strengths and AI adjusted accordingly. The Final Mix version of Birth by Sleep also saw its first release outside Japan in this collection.

Release

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix first launched in Japan on October 2, 2014, followed by North America on December 2, Australia on December 4, and Europe on December 5. Those who preordered the game in North America and Australia received an official Disney Collector's Pin. In Japan, Square Enix offered two bundles that each included Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix and a code for an Anniversary Set for Kingdom Hearts χ: the Starter Pack came with limited edition casing, while the Collector's Pack added a promo soundtrack and an art booklet. A separate collector's edition for North America and Europe contained both HD collections, a steelbook case, an art book, a Disney Kingdom Hearts pin, and a Heartless plush doll. A single-disc compilation of 1.5 Remix and 2.5 Remix for PlayStation 4 arrived on March 9, 2017 in Japan, March 28 in North America, and March 31 in Europe and Australia. The bundle Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far, which paired that compilation with Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, came out for PlayStation 4 in North America on October 30, 2018. A cloud streaming version for Nintendo Switch was discontinued on June 10 in favor of native ports for the Switch and Switch 2, scheduled for release on October 8, 2026.

Reception

The collection sold 84,935 units in its first week in Japan, and 129,660 units by November 9, 2014. It received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic. Game Informer praised the upgrades to Kingdom Hearts II and the transition of Birth by Sleep from PSP to PS3, but criticized the Re:coded movie as being for completionists only. Electronic Gaming Monthly called it a great deal for fans, praising the combat and characters while noting questionable narrative quality. GameTrailers highlighted the improved selection of games over 1.5 Remix, including previously Japan-only content, and praised the new music arrangements and cinematic retelling of Re:coded, though this opinion was not universal. IGN noted improved music, graphics, and high-level challenges, but criticized aging controls in Kingdom Hearts II and the camera system in Birth by Sleep. Hardcore Gamer had mixed views, noting that the games were not cutting-edge graphically, particularly Birth by Sleep Final Mix, but still a major improvement.
