Plot
Final Fantasy VII Revelation continues from Rebirth, concluding the narrative of the trilogy that reimagines the original Final Fantasy VII. The party, including the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE, fights the Shinra Electric Power Company and the Weapons awakened to defend the Planet. They seek to stop Sephiroth, voiced in English by Travis Willingham (replacing Tyler Hoechlin), who summoned Meteor and aims to merge alternate timelines through Reunion. The game picks up after the party's visit to the Great Glacier and culminates at the Northern Crater. It also features the party's visits to Wutai and Rocket Town, which were absent from Rebirth.
Development
Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2015, confirming it would be split into multiple games due to the scale of remaking the original with modern technology. Director Tetsuya Nomura stated that a single game would have required cutting elements. Producer Yoshinori Kitase compared the structure to the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy but noted the focus on Cloud Strife as the central protagonist. In June 2022, Kitase confirmed the series would be a trilogy, with early development on the third entry already begun. A first draft of the script was complete by September 2023, subject to change based on Rebirth's reception. Nomura, Kitase, game director Naoki Hamaguchi, and music supervisor Keiji Kawamori revealed in a September 2023 roundtable that Wutai and the full playability of Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine would be saved for the third game. Nomura stated the trilogy is designed to lead into the events of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.
Release
In January 2025, Kitase confirmed the third entry would launch within the PlayStation 5 generation. After Rebirth's commercial performance disappointed Square Enix, the publisher restructured to pursue multiplatform distribution. In April 2025, Hamaguchi teased that the series would be available on multiple platforms. In September 2025, Nomura confirmed development was progressing smoothly, and Square Enix announced the trilogy would release on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Windows. Remake Intergrade and Rebirth launched on those platforms throughout 2026. Hamaguchi stated the multiplatform shift did not affect the third game's schedule, and all versions would have gameplay and presentation parity. Final Fantasy VII Revelation was unveiled at Summer Game Fest in June 2026, with Hamaguchi confirming a spring 2027 simultaneous launch on all platforms.
