Remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games.
The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is a set of updated versions of the first six mainline Final Fantasy games, created by Tose and Square Enix. It covers the original releases of Final Fantasy (1987) through Final Fantasy VI (1994), sold individually or as the Final Fantasy I–VI Collection. Content
The Pixel Remaster series remasters the first six installments of the Final Fantasy series originally released between 1987 and 1994 on the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. An illustration gallery featuring character, monster, and concept art by Yoshitaka Amano, a music player, and a bestiary have been implemented. The Pixel Remasters lack the changes and additional content from other versions, such as dungeons, superbosses, and jobs from the Game Boy Advance versions and Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection.
Development and release
The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series was announced at E3 2021 for iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows via Steam. Prior mobile releases of Final Fantasy and II (2010) and V and VI (2014), along with their 2015 Steam iteration, were delisted from digital platforms as of July 28, 2021. The 3D Nintendo DS remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV were retitled and remain available. On December 18, 2022, Square Enix announced the series would release on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in spring 2023; the console versions launched on April 19, 2023, alongside a physical collector's edition, introducing a pixel-based font, encounter rate and EXP/gil/Ability Point modifiers, rebalanced difficulty, and selection between original NES/SNES or remastered soundtracks. The remastered Final Fantasy VI soundtrack featured vocals from the Opera House scene in seven languages. On January 30, 2024, Steam and mobile versions received version 1.1.0 with console quality-of-life features. On September 26, 2024, all six games released on Xbox Series X and Series S. Version 1.2.0 in March 2025 included UI and control improvements and bug fixes.
