Cruz Azul was founded in 1927 after a referendum among workers of the Cooperativa La Cruz Azul cement company. The club won 13 consecutive amateur league titles in Hidalgo between 1932 and 1944. It earned promotion to the Primera División in 1964. The 1968–69 season is sometimes cited as a treble-winning campaign, but that achievement is not universally recognized, and no other Cruz Azul season is widely regarded as a treble.

The night before the second leg, a group of old Cien Azul supporters sat in a small cantina near the Azteca, the TV muted, blue flags draped over every chair.
