Cruz Azul was founded in 1927 in Jasso, Hidalgo, after a referendum on 22 March 1927 selected football over baseball. The club won 15 consecutive amateur league titles in Hidalgo between 1932 and 1943. It earned promotion to the Primera División in the 1963–64 season. The club achieved a continental treble in 1968–69, winning the Primera División, Copa México, and CONCACAF Champions' Cup, becoming the first CONCACAF club and third worldwide to do so, and later the first club worldwide to win the continental treble twice. Cruz Azul's most recent league title before the split was the 1978–79 season.

Internationally, it holds the joint-record for most CONCACAF Champions Cup/Champions League titles with seven.
