Gameplay

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 2.5D fighting game where players compete in tag team combat using Marvel Comics characters. Each match begins with one primary character and a single assist fighter; the full team of four becomes accessible by fulfilling mid-match conditions such as Wall Breaks, a mechanic from Guilty Gear Strive triggered by combos or high-damage moves in the corner. Unlike other tag fighters, all team members share a single Vital Gauge that extends as more fighters are unlocked. Players can tag in assist characters before or after landing an attack, called a Crossover. The control scheme includes Light, Medium, Heavy Normal Attacks, and a Unique Attack tied to a character's ability, such as Captain America's shield throw. A Skill Gauge allows EX attacks or a cinematic Ultimate Skill when full; it can combine with the Assemble Gauge to chain multiple Ultimate Skills across the team, similar to the Delayed Hyper Combo mechanic in Marvel vs. Capcom games.

Plot

The Champion, an Elder of the Universe who destroyed worlds that failed to produce worthy opponents, targets Earth after annihilating the Shi'ar home planet Chandilar. His Promoter announces the Challenge of the Champion, forcing teams to compete in qualifying rounds. The Promoter selects heroes to lead teams of four, an homage to the Fantastic Four. Captain America, after defeating Gargantos with the Avengers, feels guilty that Hulk is excluded from a statue honoring him, Iron Man, and Thor, due to Hulk's banishment to Savage Land after losing control during the Kree-Skrull War. The Promoter gives Steve an invitation, sparking panic. Iron Man briefly fights for team leadership but concedes. They recruit Shuri, the new Black Panther after Doom's attack left T'Challa incapacitated, and Hulk, who joins despite bitterness. Iron Man learns the Champion traps losing worlds in a pocket dimension for forced exercise and fighting. After defeating the Champion once, Captain America demands an all-or-nothing battle to free the captured worlds. Hulk forgives Steve and joins. The Champion is knocked into Avengers Park, releases the other worlds, and vows to return. The park reopens with a statue including Hulk, Shuri is accepted as queen, and Iron Man begins a new armor inspired by Peni's Sp//dr.

Development

Sony Interactive Entertainment sought a first-party fighting game for PlayStation, having supported the genre through co-ownership of EVO and promotion of third-party titles. Producer Reed Baird from SIE's XDev team pitched the project to Marvel Games, proposing a tag team fighter given Marvel's history with the Marvel vs. Capcom series. Marvel, having a successful relationship with SIE from the Marvel's Spider-Man series, responded enthusiastically. SIE approached Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka; Marvel approved due to Arc System Works' experience with BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Despite initial hesitations about handling the property, CEO Minoru Kidooka convinced Yamanaka to proceed. Kidooka had previously spoken at Evo 2022 about pursuing external licenses with broader Western appeal to expand the fighting game community.

Release

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls was announced during a State of Play on June 4, 2025, with a developer documentary. It debuted at EVO 2025 with a playable demo and a Developer Combat Panel. A closed beta for PlayStation 5 ran September 5–7, 2025, featuring six characters—Iron Man, Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Storm, and Doctor Doom—with rollback netcode and spectator mode. At Tokyo Game Show 2025, a new build added Spider-Man and Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider and the Savage Land stage. A second closed beta on December 5–7, 2025, ran 72 consecutive hours, adding Spider-Man and Ghost Rider to online matches and debuting the X-Mansion stage.
