Financier convicted of sex crimes; died in custody.

Last updated

On January 20, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, Jeffrey Edward Epstein was born.[1]

Key facts and history

He grew up in the Sea Gate neighborhood of Coney Island and attended local public schools.[2] Epstein studied at Cooper Union from 1969 to 1971 and then at NYU's Courant Institute from 1971 to 1974, leaving without a degree.[3][4] In 1976, Epstein was hired at Bear Stearns, where he impressed senior executives and became a limited partner by 1980.[5][6] Epstein met billionaire Leslie Wexner in 1986 and became his financial adviser, eventually receiving full power of attorney over Wexner's affairs in 1991.[7][8]

In 1988, Epstein founded his financial management firm, J. Epstein & Company.[9] He died in an apparent jailhouse suicide on August 10, 2019.[4] Epstein's mother was Pauline "Paula" Stolofsky, of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry, and his father was Seymour George Epstein, of Polish Jewish ancestry.[10] Epstein began working as a mathematics and physics teacher at the Dalton School in Manhattan in September 1974.[11][4]

After being convicted on sex crimes, Epstein served a little over a year in detention.[12]

What the cited sources add

The same profile noted that Epstein's only publicly known billionaire client was Leslie Wexner, and that Epstein kept all his other deals and clients secret.[13] A 2002 New York magazine article stated that Epstein was said to run $15 billion for wealthy clients and that his staff numbered around 150 people.[3] The New York article also reported that Epstein's Manhattan mansion was originally bought by Wexner for $13 million in 1989 and turned over to Epstein in 1995.[3] A 2019 Daily Beast article described Epstein's childhood in Sea Gate, noting that a former neighbor called him "a nerdy little boy"[14]

A 2025 Reason article reported that after his first arrest, Epstein partnered with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak to invest in a security tech startup called Reporty Homeland Security.[12]
