The genus Cypraea was historically used to house a large number of cowrie species, but almost all of these have since been reassigned to other genera within the family Cypraeidae. The taxonomic history is complex, with many former Cypraea species now placed in genera such as Erosaria, Lyncina, Mauritia, and others. For example, Cypraea tigris remains in Cypraea, while Cypraea arabica is now Mauritia arabica and Cypraea annulus is Monetaria annulus. The species Cypraea contrastriata is considered a nomen dubium, with synonyms including Arestorides argus contrastriata and Talparia argus contrastriata. Fossil species such as Cypraea ficoides and Cypraea porcellus are also recognized within the genus.
