History
The band Goober & the Peas featured Goober (Dan John Miller, who later started Two-Star Tabernacle and Blanche), Junior (Tom Hendrickson Jr.), Shorty (Jim Currie), Boss Hoss (the late Mike Miller, Dan John's brother), and Doc (Damian Lang). Near the end of their initial run, Jack White—who would go on to found The White Stripes and other well-known rock groups—joined as drummer. At that time, before the White Stripes, he used his birth name, John Gillis, and his Pea nickname was also Doc.
The music video for "Hot Women (Cold Beer)" got regular airplay on Video Juke Box and Canada's Much Music, and it spent eight weeks on the College Music Journal video chart while the album itself charted on the CMJ Top 200 college albums list. Dan John Miller and Marcy Hedy Lynn co-directed the video, with cinematography by Scott Pelzel. The band took home Best Rock Band and Album of the Year at the 1992 Detroit Music Awards. In late November 2009, Goober & the Peas appeared on an initial lineup for the 2010 SXSW music festival.
Within a day, Goober and Junior posted a YouTube video announcing the band's return after a 15-year retirement. Their first reunion concert took place on December 26, 2009, at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, and it sold out. A second Detroit show on July 17, 2010, also at St. Andrews, sold out as well. They performed at the Ferndale DIY Fest on September 17, 2010, and at a St. Baldrick's charity event for kids with cancer in Romeo, Michigan, in March 2011. The band reunited once more in July 2014 for the first Pig & Whiskey Festival in Ferndale, Michigan.
