Background

Kostyliev was born on 2 October 1997. He started playing Counter-Strike at four years old at the recommendation of his older brother. S1mple picked up Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on its release in 2012, joining his first professional team a year later. His first notable professional team was Courage Gaming.

Around September 2014, s1mple was signed by Hellraisers. In January 2015, s1mple was removed from Hellraisers primarily due to an ESL wire ban for cheating in Counter-Strike 1.6 and toxicity issues. The ban was extended to 2016 due to ban evasion. He was soon signed by Flipsid3 Tactics, playing from February to April 2015, leaving the team in April 2015, well before their semi-final exit at ESWC 2015 in July.

In early 2016, s1mple moved to Los Angeles and joined Team Liquid. At MLG Major Championship: Columbus, Team Liquid reached the semifinals, losing to Luminosity Gaming. S1mple left Team Liquid citing homesickness, but returned for ESL One Cologne 2016, where Team Liquid became the first North American team to reach a major final, losing to SK. After leaving Team Liquid, he replaced Zeus on Natus Vincere.

With Na'Vi, s1mple won ESL One: New York 2016. In 2017, Na'Vi had mixed results, and s1mple was ranked #8 in the HLTV top 20. In 2018, Na'Vi won several events including StarSeries Season 5, CAC 2018, ESL One Cologne 2018, and BLAST Pro Series Copenhagen 2018. S1mple was ranked #1 in the HLTV top 20 for 2018.

In 2019, Na'Vi placed 3rd-4th at the first major, and s1mple received an MVP at StarSeries Season 7. At ESL One Cologne 2019, s1mple tried to knife Team Liquid's nitr0 at match point in a 3v1 scenario, resulting in Team Liquid winning the map and series. Na'Vi later replaced Edward with Boombl4. At the PGL Major Stockholm 2021, Na'Vi won the Major undefeated, and s1mple earned tournament MVP.

On 26 October 2023, s1mple announced he would step away from professional competition temporarily. He returned on loan to Team Falcons on 19 February 2024 for one match, and again on 27 September 2024 for the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 Europe RMR. After poor results, Falcons did not extend his loan.

Despite this heartbreak, s1mple's individual brilliance shone at ESL One Cologne 2016, where Valve commemorated his falling AWP shot with an in-game graffiti.
