Key facts and history

In 2015, Subway was the fastest-growing franchise in the world.[2] Suzanne Greco became president and CEO in January 2015 after her brother Fred DeLuca fell ill.[3] The chain adopted the name Subway in 1972, and two years later, in 1974, a second restaurant in Wallingford, Connecticut, marked the beginning of its franchise operations.[4] By the close of 2010, Subway had surpassed all other fast food chains globally in size, operating 33,749 restaurants.[5]

John Chidsey became Subway's chief executive officer in 2019, marking the first time someone from outside the DeLuca family held that position.[6] Shelton, Connecticut, is the location of Subway's international headquarters.[7]
