Life and career
Chloe and Halle Bailey were born in Atlanta on July 1, 1998, and March 27, 2000, respectively, and grew up in Mableton, Georgia, with their parents Courtney and Doug Bailey. Their family moved to Los Angeles in 2012. While in Georgia, the sisters had minor acting roles: Chloe appeared in The Fighting Temptations (2003), starring Beyoncé, and both appeared in the Disney Channel original movie Let It Shine (2012). Their father taught them songwriting starting at ages ten and eight.
They launched a YouTube channel at ages 13 and 11 with a cover of Beyoncé's "Best Thing I Never Had," first performing as Chloe x Halle. The duo made their talk show debut on The Ellen Show in April 2012, won the fifth season of Radio Disney's The Next Big Thing in December 2012, and appeared on Austin & Ally in September 2013 performing "Unstoppable." After gaining prominence, they independently released a four-track project titled Uncovered in 2013, consisting of covers of "Applause," "We Can't Stop," "Roar," and "Wrecking Ball."
Their cover of Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts" went viral, leading Beyoncé to sign them to Parkwood Entertainment in 2015 with a reported $1 million deal for six albums. The duo appeared in Beyoncé's visual album Lemonade (2016) and accepted the BET Award for Viewer's Choice on her behalf that year. Their professional debut EP, Sugar Symphony, was released under Parkwood on April 29, 2016, with singles "Drop" and "Fall." They performed at the White House Easter Egg Roll introduced by Michelle Obama, opened for Obama at SXSW Music Festival in March 2016, performed at the BET Awards 2016, served as Beyoncé's opening act on the European leg of The Formation World Tour, and supported Andra Day on her Cheers to the Fall tour in late 2016.
Artistry
Chloe x Halle blend pop, R&B, soul, and hip-hop with 90s R&B and jazz vocals infused with electronica. They write, arrange, and produce all songs in their home studio and are self-taught musicians. Halle cites Billie Holiday as a major vocal influence; Chloe, the primary producer, draws inspiration from Grimes, Missy Elliott, Tune-Yards, and some R&B artists. The duo describe their style as "confetti" for its harmonious nature combined with heavy beats and 808 drums, saying their music combines their individual tastes.
