Note-taking
Recording information to free the mind from recall.
Last updated
Recording information from diverse origins and platforms is what note-taking entails.[1] A note-taker captures the core of information, which relieves their memory from the burden of total recall.[1] Handwritten notes were the standard for centuries after writing emerged, yet currently digital note-taking is common due to software and websites.[2]

Key facts and history
Philosopher John Locke developed and published a popular indexing system for commonplace books.[3] The Cornell Notes method was developed by Walter Pauk of Cornell University and promoted in his 1974 book How to Study in College.[4] The charting method uses tables sometimes called study frames for subject matter that can be broken into categories.[5] Throughout human history and scientific advancement, note-taking has played a significant role.[3]
Personal records on significant topics, termed hypomnema, were created by the Ancient Greeks.[3] During the Renaissance and early modern era, pupils in schools, academies, and universities were taught to take notes, frequently crafting attractive volumes that acted as reference materials after their education concluded.[3] Walter Pauk from Cornell University created the Cornell method, which splits a page into a right-hand notes column, a left-hand cues column, and a bottom summary strip.[4] Information is assembled using spatial organization and diagrams in mapping, where ideas are placed in a node–link structure connected by lines.[6]
What the cited sources add
Evidence from a study by Linlin Luo, Kenneth Kiewra, Abraham Flanigan, and Markeya Peteranetz supported the idea that electronic note-taking offers advantages during particular learning phases.[7] According to research, guided notes help students better record lecture key points and also improve their scores on quizzes about that material.[8] Higher test scores and better information retention are achieved by students who employ the SQ3R strategy, according to research.[9] Since the early 1960s, some students have used an updated version called SQ4R, which incorporates a "Relate" step before the "Review" step.[10]
Teachers face challenges balancing educational freedom with copyright and intellectual property issues due to online note-taking.[11]
