Zherdev began playing hockey at age four in Kyiv, Ukraine, training with the Sokil Kyiv junior affiliate. He played a year ahead with 1983-born players, a group that included fellow future NHLer Anton Babchuk. After competing in the 1998 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, Zherdev and Babchuk were invited by a rival coach to develop with Elemash Elektrostal in Russia, requiring Zherdev to apply for Russian citizenship. He later accepted a loan to CSKA Moscow to train under coach Viktor Tikhonov.

Zherdev's 2005–06 season with Columbus was a breakout year, scoring 27 goals and 27 assists in 73 games while playing on the first line during Rick Nash's injury. The following season he struggled and clashed with the coaching staff, leading to trade rumors. After a meeting with General Manager Scott Howson and coach Ken Hitchcock, Zherdev rediscovered success. Contract negotiations after 2005–06 became acrimonious, with Zherdev threatening to stay in Russia; a $7.5 million, three-year deal was reached on September 28, 2006.

In July 2008, Zherdev was traded to the New York Rangers with Dan Fritsche for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Bäckman. He tied for the team lead in points with 58 in his first Rangers season. After arbitration awarded him $3.9 million, the Rangers let him go. He returned to the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010 on a one-year, $2 million deal, scoring 16 goals including his 100th NHL goal, but did not earn the trust of coach Peter Laviolette and was not re-signed.
