Background and development

Siwa signed a multi-platform talent deal with Nickelodeon in 2017, releasing child-friendly pop music and merchandise. After leaving the network, she signed with Columbia Records and began a deliberate transition toward an adult persona, citing Miley Cyrus's 2013 Bangerz era as inspiration. The EP rollout started in early April 2024 with the lead single "Karma," accompanied by a visual rebrand at the iHeartRadio Music Awards featuring dark leather outfits and dramatic face paint described as "Kiss-Inspired." In a Billboard interview, Siwa expressed a desire to pioneer a "new genre" she called "gay pop," later clarifying she was not its inventor but wanted to elevate queer pop styles. On June 30, 2024, after performing at nationwide Pride events, Siwa announced the EP's title and track listing, noting it was developed over seven months during "dark times and happy times."

Critical reception

Critics were split on Guilty Pleasure. Rolling Stone called it an identity crisis, and HIVE Magazine dubbed it her wrecking ball moment. The Daily Illini pointed out Siwa’s use of synthesizers and dance-pop for catchy songs, inspired by Miley Cyrus’s rebrand, but felt some tracks still sounded like her child-star work, while “Choose Ur Fighter” marked a shift away from her anti-bullying stance. Vulture found the title track to be thumping, nonspecific electronic-pop with a hyperpop edge, and The Cut labeled it a relic from 2012. Tool fans also slammed Siwa for allegedly swiping their wrench design for her EP merchandise.
