Bill Lochead

Former NHL forward and record-setting junior scorer.

Last updated

William Alexander "Whip" Lochead is a retired ice hockey forward and current player agent. He established the Western Jr. B goal scoring record of 72 goals in 42 games during the 1970-71 season. He was drafted 9th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1974 NHL draft.

Professional career

Lochead began his Jr. A career with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey Association in 1971, though injuries slowed him early in the 1971–72 season. Once healthy, he recorded 110 points with 56 goals in 1972–73 and 121 points with 57 goals in 1973–74, earning selections to the OHA second and first all-star teams in those seasons. The Detroit Red Wings made him their first pick in the 1974 draft.

As a rookie in 1974–75, Lochead scored 16 goals while playing on a line with Bill Hogaboam and Nick Libett. He developed as a role player over four and a half seasons, reaching the 20-goal mark in 1977–78 and helping the Red Wings reach the playoffs for the first time in eight years. On a line with Dale McCourt and Paul Woods, Detroit defeated the Atlanta Flames in the first round, with Lochead scoring two goals in the deciding 3–2 win at Olympia Stadium. After missing the first two months of the 1978–79 season due to a training camp knee injury, he was claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies on February 9, 1979, playing the final 26 games of the season with them.

In the off-season he was traded to the New York Rangers but appeared in only seven games that season, spending most of the year with the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League. There he scored 46 goals, was named to the AHL's first all-star team, and contributed strongly in the playoffs as the Nighthawks fell in the semi-finals to the eventual champion Hershey Bears. He also won the Minor League Player of the Year Award that season.
