Zebulon Devil Dogz

The Zebulon Devil Dogz, a collegiate summer baseball team in the Coastal Plain League, call Nomaco Park in Zebulon, North Carolina, home. OzBall, an organization that helps Australian athletes secure jobs overseas, set up the team. It was introduced in late 2025 to fill Five County Stadium—renamed Nomaco Park—after the Carolina Mudcats left and rebranded. The Devil Dogz played their first game on May 22, 2026. Their mascot is a red, anthropomorphic Tasmanian devil.

The Carolina Mudcats, a Minor League Baseball team, had occupied Five County Stadium in Zebulon since 1991. When the Mudcats moved and changed their name after the 2024 season, the stadium lost its tenant for the following year. By November 2025, news broke that a new Coastal Plain League team, initially said to be made up entirely of Australian-born players, would take over the venue. This arrangement came through OzBall. A naming contest soon followed, drawing over 900 suggestions; a final five were put to a vote that ended December 1. Privately, the Coastal Plain League filed a trademark for "Zebulon Devil Dogz" on February 4, 2026, and the name was officially revealed at a Zebulon Town Hall meeting on February 24, after receiving roughly 90% of public votes. The name "Devil Dogz" carries two meanings: it nods to the Tasmanian devil, an Australian mammal that serves as the mascot, and to DEVIL-DOG Dungarees, a former major employer in Zebulon that made jeans. The "z" in "Dogz" reportedly references OzBall. Officials from the Wake County Board of Commissioners and the town of Zebulon reacted positively to the announcement, unlike the mixed-to-negative response to the Wilson Warbirds' unveiling.

The team’s debut on May 22, 2026, featured an all-you-can-eat promotion with hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, and a "mystery" Australian dish. The day before, on May 21, Zebulon Mayor Jessica Daniels Harrison and Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Don Mial led a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The opening-night roster included players from New Zealand and the United States, not just Australia, contradicting the original all-Australian promise. Nomaco Park needed up to $1 million in renovations. In March 2026, the team said it would start by upgrading bathrooms, concession stands, and turf before the season. By April, all Mudcat branding had been stripped from the stadium and nearby water tower.
