Lore & Background
The Martinsville Mustangs were established in 2005 after the Martinsville Astros relocated following the 2003 season (the Astros moved to Danville as the Danville Braves for 2004, not directly becoming the Mustangs; the Mustangs were a new CPL franchise). In 2004, the City Council of Martinsville approved a city-owned franchise in the Coastal Plain League, and in an October 2004 press conference, the council announced the purchase and appointed then-city communications director Matt Hankins as team president. Hankins solicited public suggestions for a team name, receiving over 200 responses, and narrowed the list to six finalists. Through focus groups and community research, the choices were reduced to the Mallards or the Mustangs. Working with Roanoke PR firm John Lambert Associates and the Martinsville Bulletin, public input showed nearly 80 percent support for Mustangs, and the city announced the name.
In 2010, the Mustangs hired Jim Taipalus, former operations director for the Yuma Scorpions under Dave Kaval (current president of the Athletics of Major League Baseball). Under Taipalus, the team decreased expenses by 22% while increasing revenue through record-breaking attendance and game-day revenue. By the end of the 2011 season, the Mustangs achieved their highest game-day revenue in the franchise's eight-year history. Overall attendance for the 2011 season rose to 39,544, with an average of 1,582 per night—a 55% increase from the previous season—ranking the club 8th in the country for year-to-year attendance gains. According to BallParkBiz.com, the Mustangs ranked 6th in the Coastal Plain League and 24th nationally out of over 700 summer pre-minor league teams for total attendance.
In November 2012, the city selected Team Cole & Associates to manage the Mustangs for the 2013 season. In October 2015, Team Cole & Associates sold the management contract to the Coastal Plain League for the remaining contract, which expired after the 2019 season. The city then reached a management agreement with Martinsville Baseball & Sports for the 2020 season. P.L.A.N. Athletics became the managing partner on September 1, 2021.
Reader's Guide
The Martinsville Mustangs represent a successful model of community-driven collegiate summer baseball, emerging after the departure of a previous franchise. Their founding involved extensive public input, from naming to logo selection, reflecting local engagement. The team's significance is underscored by its attendance growth under Jim Taipalus, who achieved a 55% increase in average attendance and a top-25 national ranking among over 700 summer pre-minor league teams. This performance demonstrated that a small-market city-owned team could compete in fan support and revenue generation. The Mustangs also illustrate the evolving management structures typical of summer collegiate leagues, transitioning from city oversight to private management and eventually to league management. Their history provides a case study in franchise stability, community branding, and operational efficiency in the Coastal Plain League.
