Club América won the 1971 CONCACAF Champions' Cup, defeating C.D. Olimpia. The first leg in San Pedro Sula ended in a 0-0 draw. The second leg in Mexico City ended in a 2-0 victory for América, making the aggregate score 2-0. This was the second Mexican club to win the title, following Guadalajara's victory in 1962.

The competition initially had several different formats. During the opening rounds, teams competed within three regional zones: North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. From 1993 to 1996, three clubs from the North/Central American zone and one from the Caribbean zone qualified for the final round held in a central location.
