History
The team originated from the disbandment of Quantic Gaming's League of Legends roster, whose former players—including Hai and LemonNation—formed Team NomNom. After elimination in the Season 3 North American Offline Qualifier group stage, Nientonsoh and Yazuki left. In early 2013, Team NomNom rebranded as Cloud9 and won the MLG Summer Promotion Qualifiers, defeating Velocity esports. Cloud9 was reacquired by Quantic Gaming on April 1, and the roster of Balls, Meteos, Hai, Sneaky, and LemonNation went undefeated in the Summer Promotion Qualifier to enter the 2013 NA LCS Summer Split. Quantic then reverted the name to Cloud9, and former Team SoloMid manager Jack Etienne purchased the players' contracts for less than $20,000, establishing the Cloud9 organization. In the 2013 Summer split regular season, the team set a 13-game winning streak, then an LCS record, finishing 25–3. They swept Team SoloMid 3–0 in the grand finals on September 1, ending the season at 30–3 with a 90.9% winning percentage.
Rivalries
Cloud9 and Team SoloMid developed a rivalry through four consecutive NA LCS finals from Summer 2013 to Spring 2015. Cloud9 won their first regular-season match against Team SoloMid on June 12, 2013, and defeated them in the 2013 Summer and 2014 Spring finals. Team SoloMid then won the 2014 Summer and 2015 Spring finals. They met in three consecutive playoffs from Spring 2016 to Spring 2017, with Team SoloMid winning each, including the 2016 Summer and 2017 Spring finals. In 2019, Team SoloMid swept Cloud9 in the Spring semifinals. Team SoloMid handed Cloud9 their only loss in the 2020 Spring Regular Season and eliminated them in Summer 2020 Playoffs, preventing a Worlds 2020 spot. The following year, Cloud9 eliminated Team SoloMid in the 2021 Summer Playoffs, claiming the finals spot at Worlds 2021.
