Vibration
Oscillation of matter about an equilibrium point.
Last updated
Vibrating structures generate pressure waves that are perceived as sound, and those waves can in turn induce vibration in other structures.[1] Efforts to reduce noise often involve addressing vibration issues.[1] Acoustics encompasses the study of both sound and vibration, which are closely connected.[1]

Key facts and history
Vibration analysis is used in industrial maintenance to detect early signs of machine failure or deterioration.[2] A trained vibration analyst can identify failure modes such as imbalance, misalignment, and bearing faults using vibration data.[2][3] Modern vibration analysis units can display the complete vibration frequency spectrum and time data for three axes simultaneously.[2] Electrodynamic shakers are used for higher frequencies, generally from 5 Hz to 2000 Hz.[1]
Servohydraulic shakers are utilized for forcing at frequencies typically under 100 Hz.[1] In the majority of vibration testing, force is applied to a single axis of the device under test at a time, whereas real-world conditions usually involve multi-axis vibration.[4] A test method requiring multiple exciters was introduced by MIL-STD-810G, which was published in late 2008.[4] The challenge of designing such fixtures grows with a larger device under test and higher test frequencies.[5]
What the cited sources add
The "Importance of Vibration Analysis in Maintenance" source states that vibration analysis allows qualified technicians to identify known failure mode indicators of wear and tear.[2] According to that same source, vibration data acquired from reactive maintenance can help replace or repair parts showing signs of wear.[2] It also explains that careful time waveform vibration analysis can predict problems before unexpected machinery failure occurs.[2] The expense of downtime, new parts, and labor can become overwhelming if vibration analysis and monitoring are not performed.[2]
Problems with misalignment, bearing health, and bent shafts are among the key components that vibration monitoring can detect.[2]
